South Island Adventures Day 8: Greymouth to Te Nikau Retreat

It was VERY wet last night and in the morning. This made the trek from our snug little cabin to the main house to go to the loo in the middle of the night a little uncomfortable, but in all other aspects we had a really nice stay at the "little blue house"

Drew woke up really early, so we ate breakfast and played around inside for a while and then he had an early nap while I caught up on some work.

Around 11am the rain eased off and we packed up for our short drive to Pancake rocks and our stay at the Te Nikau Retreat (backpackers). The drive was really fantastic, with views out along the coast line on one side and thick forest and cliff faces on the other. When we arrived, it rained again, so we delayed the visit to the rocks.

At the Te Nikau Retreat we decided to upgrade to the "hideaway" cottage out in the bush that had become available instead of staying in the main house. I think it was a great choice, I love being out of sight of anyone else, surrounded by thick forest! It's amazing vegetation in this area too, so green and jungle like.
It has rained on and off for most of the day, but we managed to get out in the afternoon to do the Truman track that runs down past the backpackers and onto the beach. It's a beautiful bay with rough seas and a waterfall that goes down onto the sand. We didn't hang around too long though because the sand flies love Drew!

That night we had a relaxed meal cooked in the main backpackers area and then retreated to our "hideaway" in the jungle.
