Today is a new day! and we woke determined to make the most of it.
After breakfast at the backpackers we headed straight out to Franz Josef Glacier. Luckily the beginning of the walk out to the glacier is only a 10min drive from town, so no car tears!
There was a bit of cloud around, and quite a few tourists (we've been surprised at how busy the west coast is!) but the walk out to the glacier was very enjoyable. It followed the stream from the glacier all the way up to a good view of the foot of Franz Joseph.

Drew slept in the carrier most of the way, so he missed out on seeing the glacier up close.
But he woke up just before the end, so he was able to get out and walk for the last bit. We're really impressed with how far he can walk already! It's slow going, but only because of all the stops, once he gets going he is really fast!
That afternoon we took it easy and spent some time chilling out at the backpackers.
